WHAT IS YERBA MATE? Yerba mate is a traditional South American herbal tea. It is well known for its natural caffeine boost, high antioxidant content, and smooth, earthy flavour. Depending on the variety, its taste can range from fresh and herbal to smoky and full-bodied. Yerba mate is traditionally enjoyed from a special cup (called a mate) using a metal straw (known as a bombilla) and can be prepared either hot or cold (tereré). Characteristics and Tradition Origin: Extremely popular in Argentina (where it is the national drink), as well as in Brazil, Paraguay, and Chile. Preparation: Young leaves are harvested, dried (often over an open fire), and then ground. Tradition: The matero fills a gourd with yerba mate, pours in hot (not boiling, approximately 80–90°C / 176–194°F) water, and shares it among friends and family as part of a social ritual. Flavour: Earthy, herbal, and sometimes pleasantly smoky. Health Benefits and Effects Caffeine: A typical serving contains around 70–90 mg of caffeine, providing an energy boost comparable to coffee, though many people find it smoother and longer-lasting. Benefits: Rich in antioxidants, yerba mate may help improve alertness, reduce fatigue, and provides essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B6 and magnesium. Varieties: In addition to the traditional hot infusion, yerba mate is also enjoyed as a refreshing cold beverage known as tereré.
